Happy New Year folks,
A couple of bracing haiku for early January…

Steadfast
Wind-worn coping stones,
Stacked batters, wedged pinnings and
Steadfast throughstones. Still.

Slate
Crisp, frosted fronds,
Pure amidst the rutted tracks,
Beneath the slate skies.

‘slate skies’ is marvellous. Matthew ; the photo of those stones is a poem in itself of the beauty in form and functionality though your poem does justice to it 🙂
Isn’t it a great picture? I was looking for a winding lake district kind of drystone wall but I thought that one was fantastic.
I don’t think you could get a better model than that; I could look at it all day: ‘it’s a thing of beauty’: is that what Keats said?
Think you are right John.
I always enjoy your tasteful use of alliteration, Matthew. The second haiku is my favorite, yet I like them both.
Thanks David. I hope you and yours had a good Christmas!
The two haiku depict how cold and hard it is. I can almost touch it.
Excellent, Matthew!
A wee cold front at the moment, Chris. Very jealous of your southern climes!
Superb haikus, Matthew! I love the ‘slate skies’.
Thanks Susan. You’ll be familiar with those in west Scotland, same as me!
Definitely. Makes me want to go back up the NE.
Your pairing haikus are always visually and aurally lovely, Matthew.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to writing some spring-themed ones but we’re still a way from that!
Belated Happy New Year Matthew. Two wonderful haiku masterly penned.
My Friend.
Thanks Goff, and Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
Cheers.
Happy New Year Matthew. All those technical terms in the first haiku – sounds like you’ve been on a course.
Thanks Graham and happy new year to you as well. No course unfortunately, although they do run them in nearby Renfrewshire and I’ve always been tempted.
