Today’s haiku are only for the brave – winter climbing and wild swimming…

Light
Sun-starved crags over-
Hung by squeak clean cornicing.
Light down to shadow.

Loch
Gasp-grippingly cold
Creep of loch water onto
Feet, thighs, chest, shoulders.
Thanks for reading, folks. My recent short stories include ‘The Right Kind of Haunting‘ and ‘November Cold‘.

Oh wow, I certainly would not climb up one of those, and then swimming in a loch at that time… mad, quite mad! Excellent, Matthew.

Haha you and me both Chris. I like wild swimming but it needs to be slightly warmer!

I like the word ‘cornicing’ ; spell checker doesn’t 😦

It didn’t, but I overruled!😆

I always enjoy these poetic pirouettes, Matthew. I agree with John Malone about cornicing, and I’m glad you’re not discouraged by spell-checker-type constraints. I consider such wordplay the writer’s prerogative.
A question arises: what’s your environmental cutoff for engaging in wild swimming?

Oh I’m quite cowardly! I’ve got a nice wetsuit, but frost on the ground is mostly disqualifying! We’ve got a lovely loch just up the road from us which is a great wild swimming spot; I don’t use it nearly enough.

I noticed you have a “professional doctorate in education.” So the long grind is over, and it’s Dr. Richardson. Congratulations!

Thanks so much. Five years it took me, but it’s over. Phew! Have to admit I’m missing it though!
