Light and Loch | Haiku

Poetry 1 Minute

Today’s haiku are only for the brave – winter climbing and wild swimming…

Snow-covered mountains

Light

Sun-starved crags over-

Hung by squeak clean cornicing.

Light down to shadow.

A person's feet in a loch

Loch

Gasp-grippingly cold

Creep of loch water onto

Feet, thighs, chest, shoulders.

  5. I always enjoy these poetic pirouettes, Matthew. I agree with John Malone about cornicing, and I’m glad you’re not discouraged by spell-checker-type constraints. I consider such wordplay the writer’s prerogative.

    A question arises: what’s your environmental cutoff for engaging in wild swimming?

    1. Oh I’m quite cowardly! I’ve got a nice wetsuit, but frost on the ground is mostly disqualifying! We’ve got a lovely loch just up the road from us which is a great wild swimming spot; I don’t use it nearly enough.
