Lattice and Lichen | Haiku

Good morning folks,

It’s all bare branches and frozen fronds this morning with a couple of haiku…

Lattice

White, crusted crystal

Over tumbling water spans.

Fragile latticing.

Lichen

Flakes of lichen,

Braced against the chill north wind.

Imperceptible climb.

Things I’ve read this week…

Mr. and Mrs. Haben – Flappers and their Secrets‘ by Jennifer L. Meacham is a wonderfully-crafted little story. I genuinely didn’t see where it was going. It is not a tale which I can hint at without giving away the reveal, but well worth a read if you have a spare five minutes.

The Writer’s Museum, Edinburgh celebrates the lives of Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Walter Scott. It’s not one of Edinburgh’s most advertised tourist attractions, but still I am surprised that in all the times I have visited, lectured in, and travelled through the city I have never heard of it. I have Kaleb Bird’s blog to thank for alerting me to its presence and post-lockdown I’ll be planning a visit!

*Thanks for reading, folks. Images courtesy of Gardening Know How and Wikipedia. My recent writing includes ‘The Tale-Teller’s Manifesto‘ and ‘Zenith‘.

Not necessarily in that order.

  1. They both made me shiver, Matthew.

    I especially appreciated “imperceptible climb.”

If I thought about your haikus too much, I’d never try my own (and I know I disregarded the intent that they refer to the natural world—as opposed to the extremely unnatural world of my recent foray into the genre!)
